ABOUT ME

I am a passionate STEM student who is committed to using technology to solve challenges in India. My project, a Solar-Powered Water Purifier has the potential to provide clean usable water to thousands of people in rural areas. I have received mentorship from The Purpose Academy, a program by 1M1B, in partnership with the SCET at UC Berkeley and The Innovation Acceleration Group (IAG). I am confident that my device will have a positive impact in my current installations at schools and villages in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. In addition to my work on the water purifier, I am also an active volunteer at two NGOs, Manav Mandir Mission Trust and Lions Club Service Foundation. I enjoy swimming, playing chess, guitar, and piano. I am eager to continue my work on my project and to use my skills to make a positive impact in my community.

Project Details

Conservation of energy is essential in creating a sustainable environment for the future. My project is a Solar-Powered Water Purifier which uses the chlor-alkali process to purify water. The purifier is specially designed for remote villages where access to clean water is limited or non-existent. This system is simple, easy to operate and sustainable, making it ideal for rural communities with limited resources. My device uses a solar panel to generate electricity, which is used to power an electrolysis process that separates salt into sodium and chlorine. The chlorine is then used to disinfect the water and kill harmful bacteria, viruses and other pathogens present in the water. The purified water is collected in a storage tank and made available for use by the local community. Access to clean water can reduce the incidence of water borne diseases, which is also a cause of high mortality in children.

IconThe Problem

  • According to the Composite Water Management Index (CWMI) report by NITI Aayog, India is facing a severe water crisis, with 50% of the population experiencing high to extremely high water shortage.
  • According to The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the quality of available water is also a major issue with 70% of India’s surface water being contaminated.
  • According to the World Bank report, India may lose up to 6% of its GDP due to water scarcity, exacerbated by climate change. The combined effects of growing populations, rising incomes & expanding cities will see a demand for water rising exponentially, while supply becomes more erratic and uncertain.

IconOur Approach

  • The Solar-Powered Water Purifier is a sustainable, environmental friendly and portable device. Harnessing the renewable solar energy makes it suitable for disaster stricken areas, enabling rapid deployment with immediate access to purified water.
  • It utilizes stainless sheets in the chlor alkali process, which involves the electrolysis of NaCl to produce NaOH and chloride ions, enabling efficient water purification.
  • To ensure the quality and effectiveness of the purification process, the TDS (total dissolved solids) and pH levels of both the incoming and outgoing water from the tank is measured. TDS is checked using a TDS meter or a conductivity meter; similarly the pH of the water is measured using a pH meter or test strips.

Crowdfunding Campaign

I have been volunteering with 'Manav Mandir Mission Trust' to teach students in their schools science through simple experiments. During my visits, I held talks on sustainable living and issues related to availability of clean drinking water in rural areas. Under the guidance from my parents, I set about raising funds for the installations of my device, The Solar-Powered Water Purifier. Initially, I approached family and friends, but I found this to be limiting and time consuming. Hence I decided to list my initiative on 'Milaap', an online crowdfunding platform. This opened up my fundraising campaign to the public while facilitating funds transfer directly to the NGO. My initiative is a small step in solving the shortage of clean water supply in schools and rural communities by providing a simple yet dependable source. Support NGO

Impact

The impact of my project in the schools and villages is significant as the availability of clean drinkable water can have a positive transformation on the health and well-being of the people. Through outreach programs using science and innovation, my initiative is to improve the quality of life of people living in these remote locations.

  • Installation at Sahibabad, Uttar Pradesh is used by 35+ migrant workers at a factory construction site
  • Installation at NGO school at Saria Kale Khan, Delhi is used by 80+ students and staff
  • Installation at NGO school and refugee camp in Manju-ka-Tilla, Delhi is used by 25+ migrant families

MENTORSHIP FROM THE PURPOSE ACADEMY
STUDENT IMMERSION PROGRAM

Under my guidance of my mentor, Manav Subodh at The Purpose Academy (TPA), a program established by 1M1B, I formulated the idea of utilizing solar-powered technology to address water related challenges. This innovative project encompasses various applications, including water purification, quality analysis, and distribution. While the purification aspect is well-known, there is a significant under-utilization of advanced technologies for water quality assessment and distribution systems. Recognizing the social significance of the project, it was acknowledged by the SCET at the UC Berkeley. In April 2023, I had the opportunity to present my work in San Francisco and receive feedback accolades from my peers. As an UN-accredited youth-focused organization, 1M1B is committed to supporting initiatives that address pressing global challenges, and I am proud to contribute to this mission through my project.
